Birth Registration

Delay
 
A 10day deadline is given for birth registration

Required document:
- An hospital or clinic maternity certificate informing of the birth
- A copy of the marriage contract
- A family register, or one of the children’s birth certificate
NB: If the legal deadline for the registration is not met, birth can only be registered by a law court verdict.
- It is strictly forbidden to give foreign names to newly born children. Other immoral or ugly names are not allowed either. It is also prohibited to give a baby a leader’s full forename and surname.
For those who are born outside Tunisia, contact is done through the embassy, or the Council, by giving a birth certificate signed by civil status councillor of the foreign country.

Burial Licence

Required Documents

- Medical certificate stipulating that death was in natural circumstances
- Two trusted witnesses (only for countryside)
- A Licence from the republic Procurator in case death was mysterious.
N.B:
- Anyone who buries a dead person without a Burial Licence will be sentenced to prison and fined.
- When there is suspicion in the death cause, the Burial Licence will only be provided on basis of the police report.
- In case the corpse has to be transported from a place to another, the civil status councillor of the region where burial will take place will write the Burial Licence and on basis of the documents enclosed in the corpse’s file (Medical certificate, Death certificate) with no need to quest for the death causes.
Death Registration
Delay: A 3 – day deadline is given for registration
Required Documents:
- As much information as possible about the dead person.
- A medical certificate
- A police report in case of unnatural death
- A copy of the National Identity Card of the person who declares death.
N.B:
· In case the deadline was not met, death registration will be possible only through a law court verdict.
In case death took place at the hospital, this has to be declared lest the death will be registered twice through the hospital's declaration.S

 

Documents required for a marriage contract:

- A up-to-date-birth certificate based on the original registration
- A doctor’s certificate (for the husband and wife)
- A photocopy of the identity card (for the husband and wife)
- A court consent for younger than 20 year-old (for the husband) and 17 year-old (for the wife).
- An embassy consents if the husband or the wife is a foreigner.
- A photocopy of each of the two witnesse's identity card.
- A death certificate of the husband or wife (for the widows).

N.B: the parent's consent is indispensable if the husband or wife is underage.
A testimony that the husband has converted to Islam if he desires to marry a Muslim woman.

NB:
- The parents consent is necessary in case one of the will be husband or wife is under age
- If the husband or wife is a National Security clerk, he/she will have a licence from the Department of National Affairs that will allow the marriage.
- If two foreigners were to marry, the documents would have to be translated by a sworn – in interpreter.
